10 Cozy Habits That Make Any Big City Feel Like Home
Share
Create comfort, peace and connection. No matter where you are.
Big cities can feel overwhelming. The noise, the crowds, the constant movement. But what if I told you that coziness isn’t something you leave behind when you travel: it’s something you bring with you?
I had this thought during a recent layover in Hong Kong. Wandering through the side streets, I found myself in a quiet little café (truthfully, I had searched for it beforehand, knowing I needed somewhere that felt like home.)
I ordered tea, sat down in front of a bookshelf, opened my journal, and started writing. Just like I always do.
That moment reminded me: the feeling of home can exist anywhere, if you take the step & create it. It’s not about the size of the room or silence, it’s more about ritual, warmth, and having a moment for yourself.
Here are 10 cozy habits you can cultivate to build that grounded, peaceful feeling (even in the busiest cities in the world).
1. Find Your “Café Anchor”
Choose one café wherever you are (a space that feels like a cozy living room or carries a familiar, welcoming energy.) Let it become your sanctuary: order the same drink, sit at the same table, and let your nervous system recognize the pattern.
This becomes your go-to spot for writing, thinking, or simply existing with ease.
Tip from my own routine: I always bring my journal. My guide The Quiet Reset offers 4 weeks of calming prompts that make any café moment feel meaningful.
2. Create a Scent Ritual
Scents are emotional anchors (more powerful than we often realize). Carry a travel-size essential oil, a small perfume bottle, or a scented hand cream that reminds you of warmth and calm.
I feel like we all tend to underestimate the emotional impact of smell, but isn’t it crazy how one familiar scent can soften your nervous system in seconds? It can also awaken memories that have been tucked away for years, like being suddenly transported to a moment you thought you’d forgotten.
3. Slow Down With Purpose
While the city rushes past, give yourself permission to slow down. Walk without headphones. Sit on a bench and notice the rhythm around you.
Cozy living in cities begins when you stop trying to match the speed of everyone else and instead allow yourself to be fully present, even if you can only handle it for a few minutes.
4. Build a Morning or Evening Routine (Even When Traveling)
Create small rituals to begin or end your day, no matter where you are. Maybe it’s a slow tea ceremony, a five-minute journaling practice, or playing the same song while you do your skin care.
These small moments give your days a shape and that shape becomes your soft structure when the outside world feels chaotic.

5. Bring Something Familiar in Your Bag
Keep one grounding object with you at all times (a book, a cozy scarf, a small candle, or your favorite pen.) I obviously always have my journal with me but its definitely a heavy object to carry around.
These tactile tokens act as mini sanctuaries you can carry.
6. Visit Bookstores & Libraries in Every City
Bookstores and libraries are often the quietest, most soul-nourishing spaces in big cities. They offer a kind of sanctuary that doesn’t ask anything of you.
Spend an hour browsing, journaling between the shelves, or simply soaking in the quiet energy. You might discover a local writer whose words meet you exactly where you are.
7. Make Space for Intentional Aloneness
Alone time in cities doesn’t have to feel isolating… in fact, it can be incredibly nurturing. Choose a park bench, take yourself on a solo lunch date, or explore without a map.
Let yourself be fully present in your own company. Sometimes, that’s the coziest company of all.
8. Curate a “Comfort Sounds” Playlist
Create a playlist filled with soothing sounds: rain, café ambiance, instrumental jazz, distant street noises…anything that feels like home to your ears.
Play it in hotel rooms, on subway rides, or while unpacking in a new space. The right sounds can create a sense of safety and peace, no matter where you are.
9. Romanticize the Ordinary
Cozy living isn’t about perfection, it’s about noticing the beauty in the mundane. Watch the way your coffee steams against a rainy window. Admire the flicker of city lights on the pavement.
When you treat everyday moments like poetry, you stop chasing comfort and start creating it.
10. Journal to Process the Noise
The noisier the outside world becomes, the more important it is to cultivate clarity within. Journaling always gives me a safe place to untangle thoughts, regulate emotions, and reconnect with myself.
I try to not just use it as a document, but to soften the sharp edges of the day.
🖋 My guide The Quiet Reset offers journal prompts designed for overstimulated minds. It’s ideal for hotel nights, layovers, or whenever you need to come back to yourself.
Let the City Be Your Backdrop, Not Your Boss
You don’t have to escape the city to find peace. You just need to learn how to bring your cozy mindset with you.
Build these habits and you’ll begin to feel it:
You are not just in the city.
You are at home in it.
